Toward Eliminating Perinatal Comfort Care for Prenatally Diagnosed Severe Congenital Heart Defects: A Vision

Over the past 40 years, medical and surgical management of congenital heart disease has advanced considerably. However, substantial room for improvement remains certain lesions that have high rates morbidity mortality. Although most cardiac conditions are well tolerated during fetal development, abnormalities progress in severity over course gestation impair development other organs, such as lungs or airways. It follows intervention could potentially slow reverse elements progression improve prognosis defects. In this review, we detail specific may benefit from intervention, some which already documented improved outcomes with interventions, state-of-the-science each these areas. This review includes relevant studies a PubMed database search 1970 to present using key words cardiac, surgery, EXIT procedure. Fetal surgery is an exciting frontier promises further outcomes. When fetuses who can identified appropriately referred centers excellence area, patient care will improve.
